How to set your agency's writing rules (ContentForge Writing)

Set the tone, rules, banned words, client-data use, SEO limits and style examples Zeus follows when he writes website copy for your clients.

Updated October 15, 2026

Settings → ContentForge Writing holds your agency's writing rules for website copy. The page says where they apply: "Used everywhere Zeus writes site copy; tone and banned terms also apply to meta tags, FAQs, Business Profile copy and ads". That means service pages, service area pages, landing pages and the pages and sections Zeus writes in Mount Olympus, plus the tone and banned words in shorter copy. Zeus follows them on top of each client's own brand voice and Directions for Text. Blog posts have their own page: Blog Writing Rules.

How to set the rules

  1. Go to Settings → ContentForge Writing.
  2. Click the Website Copy card. It shows Default until you open it for the first time, then Configured.
  3. Work through the sections on the left (below).
  4. Click Save Changes. "Configuration saved" shows when it's kept.

Tone & Voice

  • Tone Preset: Professional (longer sentences, credential-forward; the default), Friendly (conversational, shorter sentences), Premium (confident, quality-focused, no discounting language) or Direct (short sentences, numbers over adjectives).
  • Custom Tone Description: the exact voice in your own words.
  • Person: First person (I/We), Second person (You/Your) (the default) or Third person (They/The company).
  • Use contractions (don't, won't, etc.): on by default.

Content Rules

  • Rules: your own must-do list. By default "Include a clear call-to-action on every page" and "Reference the business owner or differentiator naturally".
  • Minimum Word Count: empty means no minimum.
  • Always include a CTA: on by default.
  • Reference owner by name (pulled from client data): off by default.

Exclusions

  • Banned Words: by default revolutionary, life-changing, best and #1.
  • Banned Phrases: by default "We pride ourselves", "We offer" and "Our services".
  • No unsupported superlatives (best, #1, top-rated without proof), No first person (I/We/Our) and No fictional testimonials or case studies: all on by default.
  • Additional Exclusions: anything else to avoid, in your own words.

Client Data Usage

Which parts of the client's profile Zeus weaves in:

  • Use business differentiator ("What Makes You Different"): on.
  • Use "stand against" positioning: on.
  • Reference owner story / about: off.
  • Mention credentials & certifications: on.
  • Use detailed service descriptions: on.
  • Use service areas for local context: on.
  • Additional Instructions for Using Client Data: for example "Always lead with the business proof point in the first 50 words".

SEO Guidelines

  • Keyword Density: Natural (Zeus decides) (the default), 1-2%, 2-3% or Minimal.
  • Min H2 Headings: 4 by default.
  • Meta Title Max Length: 60 characters by default.
  • Meta Description Max Length: 155 characters by default.
  • Enable internal linking in generated content: on by default.

Style Examples

  • Examples of Writing You Love: paste paragraphs in the style you want.
  • Examples of Writing You Hate: paste paragraphs you never want to see.
  • Style Notes: anything else about style.

Refine with Zeus

Each section has a Refine with Zeus box. Type a request such as "Make the tone more casual" or "Add a rule about always mentioning warranties" and press Enter. Zeus rewrites that section's settings and explains what he changed. Review it: nothing is saved until you click Save Changes.

Return to Default

Return to Default resets just the section you're on. You're asked to confirm ("Reset "Tone & Voice" to default settings?"). Click Save Changes afterwards to keep it.

Examples of good rules

  • Rule: "Mention the 10-year workmanship warranty on every service page."
  • Banned phrase: "No job too big or too small."
  • Additional Exclusions: "Never mention pricing; always say 'free estimate'."
  • Style note: "Short paragraphs, no more than three sentences."

Limits and what it can't do

  • One set of rules covers the whole agency. For one client, use that client's Directions for Text (Client → Settings → Generation Directions).
  • New copy only. Pages already written don't change. Rewrite them to apply new rules.
  • Facts always win over style. Zeus won't invent prices, offers or quotes to satisfy a rule.
  • Refine with Zeus can be used up to 20 times a minute and 300 times a day per agency.

Credits

Everything on this page is free, including Refine with Zeus.

Who can use it

The agency owner and admins (it's under Settings).

Troubleshooting

  • "Failed to save configuration": your changes weren't kept. Check your connection and click Save Changes again.
  • Refine with Zeus didn't change anything: Zeus may be busy, or you've hit the refine limit. Wait a minute and try again.
  • Zeus still uses a phrase I banned: check its exact spelling in Banned Phrases, and that you clicked Save Changes. Check the client's Directions for Text don't ask for it.
  • "Failed to load configurations": refresh the page. If it keeps happening, contact support.
