Tags, tag categories and colors

Make tags with colors, group them in categories, rename, move, merge and delete them, tag or untag many contacts at once, and filter contacts by tag.

Updated October 17, 2026

Tags are simple labels for contacts: "VIP", "Spring promo", "Wedding". Each business has its own.

Making and managing tags

Owners and managers manage tags in Settings → Tags (the agency can switch this off for a client's business):

  • Make a tag with a name, an optional description and a color (pick one from the palette or any color you like). One tag per name: "VIP" and "vip" are the same tag;
  • Categories group tags, for example "Lead source" or "Interests". A tag with no category shows under No category. Deleting a category keeps its tags;
  • Move up to 100 tags into another category at once;
  • Rename or recolor a tag at any time;
  • Merge: pick the tag to keep and the tags to fold into it. Every contact with any of them gets the kept tag, then the others are deleted;
  • Delete takes the tag off every contact.

Tagging contacts

Anyone in the business can put existing tags on a contact, or on many contacts at once from the contact list (tick them, then Add tags or Remove tags). Website forms, imports and webhooks can add tags too. Adding or removing a tag shows in the contact's Activity history.

The tag picker searches tag and category names and shows tags grouped by category.

Filtering by tag

The contact list filters by has any of these tags, has all of these tags (up to 5), has none of these tags, or contacts with no tags at all, and a smart list remembers it.

Built for automations

Tags are tracked by a fixed id. Renaming, recoloring or moving a tag changes nothing for the smart lists (and, later, automations) that use it, and every tag added or removed is recorded so it can start an automation.
