A popup is a small window that opens over the page. You design it like any page, so every widget works inside it: text, images, buttons, forms and more. Use one for a coupon, an announcement, a quote form or a newsletter sign-up.
How to create a popup
- Open Pages in the left rail and choose the Popups tab.
- Click + New Popup.
- Pick a starting design:
- Blank: "An empty popup to design yourself".
- Announcement: "Heading, text and a button".
- Offer / Coupon: "A deal with a "No thanks" close link".
- Contact form: "Heading and a contact form".
- Image + text: "An image beside a heading, text and button".
- Type a Popup name (it's only for you; leave it empty to use the design's name) and click + Add Popup.
- The popup's background is the site's page background from the theme, so it changes when the theme does. The canvas switches to the popup at its real size. The header and footer are hidden. Edit it like a normal page.
- Click Popup settings in the bar at the top to set how it looks and when it opens, then Done to go back to your pages.
The bar says "Opens from any link set to this popup (Popup link)." or, if it opens by itself, "Opens automatically (see settings) and from Popup links." Popups go live after you publish the site.
The Popups list
Each popup shows its name. A lightning icon means it Opens automatically. Click a name to edit it, or click ⋯ for:
- Edit: opens it on the canvas.
- Settings: opens the popup settings.
- Rename: type the new name and press Enter.
- Duplicate: makes a copy.
- Delete: asks "Delete ""?" — "Links to it will stop opening anything. This can't be undone."
Popup settings
Click Popup settings on the canvas bar, or ⋯ → Settings in the list. The window is called "Popup settings — ". Click Save when done ("Popup settings saved — live after you publish the site").
Size & position
- Width (computer & tablet): 240 to 1200 px. Default 560 px.
- Width (phone): 200 to 480 px. Default 340 px.
- Position on screen: one of seven spots: top left, top, top right, center, bottom left, bottom or bottom right. Default center.
- Corners: 0 to 40 px rounding. Default 12 px.
- Shadow: on or off. Default on.
- Animation: Zoom (default), Fade, Slide up or None.
Background & closing
- Dim the page behind the popup: on by default. Turned off, visitors can keep using the page while the popup is open, which suits a small corner message.
- Overlay color and Darkness (0 to 95%, default 55%): shown when dimming is on. The color uses the color picker.
- Show the X close button: on by default.
- Close when clicking outside the popup: on by default (only with dimming on).
- Esc always closes a popup. Any button or text link inside it can use the Close popup link type.
Corner button
- Show a button in a corner of the page that opens this popup: a button fixed in a corner of every page, like a "FREE PLANNER" tab.
- Button text: up to 60 characters. Starts as the popup's name.
- Corner: top left, top right, bottom left or bottom right. Default bottom right.
- From the side and From the top / bottom: 0 to 120 px.
- Button color and Text color.
- Text size: 10 to 24 px. Corners: 0 to 40 px.
- It shows on the pages and devices chosen below, even when the popup doesn't open by itself.
Open automatically
- After the page loads, with a Wait of 0 to 60 seconds (default 5).
- When the visitor scrolls down the page, once they've Scrolled 5 to 100% (default 50%).
- When the visitor is about to leave (computers only): opens when the pointer moves to leave the page.
- When any of these (or the corner button) is on, you also get:
- Devices: Computer, Tablet and Mobile checkboxes.
- Pages: Every page or Only these pages, with a checkbox per page. If some pages were excluded, you see "Except …" with Include them.
- How often: Once per visit (default), Once every few days (1 to 90 Days, default 7) or Every page view.
How to open a popup from a link
- On any button, text link, image or column, open the link picker, choose Popup and pick the popup.
- Inside a popup, choose Close popup for a "No thanks" link.
- Menu links can open a popup too. In Manage Navigation, switch to Custom Links, select a link, choose Popup under Links to and pick the popup. This works in the header menu and in the mobile menu: the menu closes and the popup opens.
Examples
- Coupon on exit: start from Offer / Coupon, turn on When the visitor is about to leave (computers only), set How often to Once every few days with 14 days.
- Quote form from the header: start from Contact form, then set the header's "Get a quote" button to Popup → this popup.
- Free guide tab: turn on the Corner button with "FREE GUIDE", bottom right, on Every page, with no automatic opening.
- Holiday hours notice on the homepage only: Announcement, After the page loads with a 2-second wait, Only these pages → Home, Once per visit.
Limits and what it can't do
- When the visitor is about to leave only works on computers. Phones have no pointer to track.
- Popups only go live when you publish the whole site.
- In Edit mode, clicking a popup link selects the widget. To change a popup, open it from Pages → Popups.
- Preview ignores How often, so a popup shows every time you preview the page. Forms inside don't send anything in Preview.
- A deleted popup can't be brought back, and links to it stop opening anything.
- Popups don't appear in the page list, the menu or the sitemap.
- Importing a site from a supported builder brings its popups across as popups here, with their corner buttons.
Who can use it
- Agency team members with the Mount Olympus tool.
- Client people with the Popups permission (or Editor) see the Popups tab and can edit inside popups. Without it, the tab is hidden. See Client permissions.
Troubleshooting
- The popup doesn't open on the live site: publish the site after creating or changing the popup. Then check Devices, Pages and How often: with Once per visit it won't show again until the visitor's next visit. Try a private browser window.
- The popup opens every time in Preview: that's expected. Preview ignores How often.
- The exit popup never shows on my phone: When the visitor is about to leave only works on computers. Add After the page loads or When the visitor scrolls down the page for phones.
- "No popups yet — add one in Pages → Popups." in a link picker: create the popup first.
- Visitors can't close it: turn on Show the X close button, or add a Close popup link. Esc always works on a computer.
- The corner button is missing on some pages: it follows the Devices and Pages settings.
- Clicking the popup link in the editor doesn't open it: that's normal in Edit mode. Use Preview, or open the popup from Pages → Popups.
