How to link buttons, text and images (the link picker)

Every link type in the link picker explained — site pages, dynamic pages, web addresses, popups, anchors, blog posts, email, call, text message and file downloads — plus where it's used and why a link can go nowhere.

Updated October 15, 2026

The link picker is the list of link types you see whenever you set where something goes: a button, a text link, an image click, a whole column and more. Pick a type, fill in its fields, and the link is saved with the widget.

How to add a link

  • Button: select it, click Manage Button on its toolbar, and use Set what the button links to.
  • Text: select the words in a text widget and click Link in the text toolbar. The Add Link window opens (Edit Link on an existing link).
  • Image: in the image's settings, set what a click does to Open a link (the other choices are Nothing and Enlarge).
  • Logo: choose Link to homepage, No link, or Choose another link for the link picker.
  • A whole column or box: select it and click Link on its floating toolbar (Edit Link once set). "Visitors can click anywhere in this box to follow the link. Buttons and links inside it keep their own links." Remove link takes it off.

Pick a link type, fill in the fields under it, and close or save the window. The link works in Preview and on the live site after you publish.

Link types

  • Existing site page: pick a page from Select page…. The list uses each page's name. A link to a navigation folder doesn't go anywhere.
  • Dynamic Page: pick the Dynamic page, then the Item (one collection item, for example the "Austin" service-area page). Inside a Dynamic Repeater, or on the dynamic page itself, you can pick The current item (each item links to its own page), so every card links to its own item.
  • Web address: type the URL (for example https://example.com). Tick Open in new tab to keep your site open. Under Advanced, tick nofollow, noopener or noreferrer. noopener is on by default.
  • Popup: pick which popup opens.
  • Close popup: "Closes the popup this is in (e.g. a "No thanks" button)." Use it inside a popup.
  • Anchor: pick a spot to scroll to. Named anchors are listed under each page's name, so you can link to a spot on another page. Sections on this page lists this page's sections too. Add a named anchor with right-click → Set as Anchor on a section or column (see Keyboard shortcuts and menus).
  • Back to top: scrolls to the top of the page. No fields.
  • Scroll to bottom: scrolls to the bottom of the page. No fields.
  • Blog post: pick the Post. Optionally type a heading's anchor in Jump to a heading in the post (optional), for example "what-to-look-for". Draft posts show "(draft)" in the list.
  • Email address: type the Email address, and optionally a Subject and Body. Clicking opens the visitor's email app with them filled in.
  • Click to call: type the Phone number. On phones, tapping it starts the call.
  • Text message (SMS): type the Phone number and an optional Pre-filled message. "Opens the visitor's messaging app — works on phones; most desktop browsers ignore it."
  • File for download: click Choose file and pick or upload a file (for example a PDF menu). It downloads with its original file name. Change file swaps it, and the × removes it.
  • Cookie settings (reopen preferences): "Opens the cookie banner's preferences so visitors can change their choice. Usually in the footer." If the cookie banner is off, the picker says so with a link to Settings → Privacy. See Cookie banner.

Where the link picker is used

The link picker appears in buttons, text links, images, the logo, icons, shapes, Lottie animations, Text & Image, Text on Glass, Expanding Media, pricing tables, the price calculator, multi-location cards, list and card items (Manage Items), column and box links, collection link fields, Business Text links and custom widget link fields.

Some places show fewer types:

  • Logo: no Back to top or Scroll to bottom.
  • Contact form → After someone submits → Go to a page: only page, dynamic page, web address, close popup, anchor and cookie settings types.
  • Business Text links: only page, dynamic page, web address, email, click to call and cookie settings types.
  • Menus use their own list in Manage Navigation: Site Page, Web address, Anchor, Mega menu and Popup. See Header, footer and navigation.

Examples

  • "Call now" button for a plumber: Button → Click to call → +1 555 555 0100. On phones it dials straight away.
  • "Get a quote" by text: Text message (SMS) with the pre-filled message "Hi! I'd like a quote for a new roof."
  • Download the menu: a restaurant's button → File for download → menu.pdf.
  • "See our prices" in a hero: Anchor → the Pricing section's anchor, so the page scrolls down to it.
  • Service cards that each open their own page: in a Dynamic Repeater, link each card's button to Dynamic Page → The current item.

Limits and what it can't do

  • Create new page in the page list is grayed out. Add the page in the Pages panel first, then link to it.
  • Links that run code (web addresses starting with javascript:, vbscript: or data:) are removed.
  • Text message links work on phones. Most computer browsers ignore them.
  • The current item only works inside a Dynamic Repeater or on the dynamic page that uses that collection.
  • In Edit mode, clicking a link selects the widget instead of following the link. Use Preview to try links.
  • A link to a draft page or an unpublished blog post won't work on the live site until that page or post is published.

Who can use it

  • Agency team members with the Mount Olympus tool.
  • Client people with Editor or Widget content can change links in widgets they're allowed to edit. Column and box links need Editor. Business Text links need Content Library or Editor.

Troubleshooting

  • My link goes nowhere: the page, popup, post or file it pointed at may have been deleted, or a required field is empty (no page chosen, no URL, no item chosen for a dynamic page). Open the link and pick the destination again.
  • My button links to a folder and does nothing: navigation folders have no page. Link to a page inside the folder.
  • The anchor isn't in the list: add it first with right-click → Set as Anchor. The list says "Loading anchors…" while it loads. An anchor that was removed shows as "#name (not found)". Pick another one.
  • The anchor link jumps to the wrong place: a section from the old Sections on this page list only works on the page it's on. For other pages, use a named anchor.
  • ""Current item" only works inside a Dynamic Repeater or on a dynamic page using this collection.": pick a specific item, or move the widget into a Dynamic Repeater for that collection.
  • "No dynamic pages yet — add one from Pages → Add Page → Dynamic page.": there's no dynamic page to link to yet. See Collections and dynamic pages.
  • "No popups yet — add one in Pages → Popups.": create the popup first.
  • "Set up the blog (Blog panel) to link to posts.": the site has no blog yet.
  • "That address can’t be used here. Use a page on this site, a web address (https://…), an email or a phone number." (Business Text): pick one of those link types. "Choose where the link goes." means nothing was picked.
  • Call or text link does nothing on a computer: that's normal for most computer browsers. Try it on a phone.
  • The link opens in the same tab: tick Open in new tab (Web address only).
